Acquiring Leadership Skills from the Stage
Leadership isn’t really about power or authority; leadership is about getting things done through people. Leadership means creating forward momentum – making things happen. Leadership sometimes means taking decisive action, and sometimes means standing back and listening. Leadership means taking responsibility – especially when no one else will.
There are many opportunities to acquire leadership skills in high school. The most obvious are being elected to the student council, or quarterback of the football team, or president of a club. For some students leadership skills emerge by mounting a successful theatrical production.
Theatre represents unique challenges. Theatre means an immovable deadline (opening night) where once you start, you must finish. In theatre there are no mid-performance substitutions from the bench. Theatre means reacting on the fly to the uncontrollable – unexpected audience laughter (or silence), a missed line or an early entrance. Theatre means acting as a unified team and giving everything you can give whether you have 1 line or 1,000.
This Thursday, April 28, the Dublin High Drama Club will take the stage after weeks of building sets, finding props, preparing costumes, designing programs, memorizing lines, practicing accents, perfecting blocking (the movement of actors around the stage) and becoming characters. When the show starts, the show will go on despite the inevitable surprises inherent in live theatre.
Dublin High Drama Club students have had to step up – to lead – in order to prepare for the audience. This Thursday, join them in Dublin High’s Little Theatre for “The Importance of Being Earnest”.
